Pipedrive vs HubSpot: free to start, or predictable forever

HubSpot is cheaper to begin with and free for two people. Pipedrive costs money from day one and tells you exactly what it will cost in three years. That's the entire trade.

How we're funded: we have an affiliate relationship with Pipedrive and may earn a commission if you sign up through our link, at no extra cost to you. We have no affiliate relationship with HubSpot and earn nothing if you choose it. Since our recommendation below splits between the two depending on your situation — and one of those situations points at the tool that pays us nothing — the useful check is whether the reasoning holds, not who we're paid by. Full disclosure.

The short answer

Two people and a tight budget? HubSpot. Its free tier genuinely covers two users at no cost, and Starter is $7/seat/month billed annually against Pipedrive's $14. For a founder and one salesperson, that's hard to argue with.

A sales team that will grow? Pipedrive. Its ladder runs $14 → $24 → $49 → $69 per seat, published plainly, per seat, forever. You can model your cost in 2029 from its pricing page today.

The thing to weigh: HubSpot's entry price is the cheapest here and its upper tiers are the most expensive. That's not an accusation — it's a deliberate model, and it works well for companies that grow into the whole platform. It works badly for people who chose it because it was free and later discovered what the next tier costs.

A limitation we should name: we verified HubSpot's Free and Starter pricing directly, but did not establish current published figures for its Professional and Enterprise tiers, which are priced separately per hub. We are therefore not quoting them. If you expect to outgrow Starter, price those tiers yourself before committing — that step is where HubSpot's cost profile changes most, and it is exactly the number this comparison cannot give you today.

Two different pricing philosophies

The numbers matter less than the shape of them.

Pipedrive charges per seat, flat. Four tiers, published prices, no consumption meter. Ten salespeople on Premium costs $5,880 a year and will still cost that next year. For a sales manager building a budget, this predictability is the product.

HubSpot charges per seat plus credits. Starter includes 500 HubSpot Credits, which fuel AI features and scale with usage; you can buy credit packs, enable pay-as-you-go, or set a spend cap. That's genuinely flexible — and it means your bill has a variable component that depends on how much your team uses certain features.

Neither is wrong. But if you've been burned by a bill that moved without you changing anything, that difference is the one to weigh, and it's more consequential than any feature comparison.

Scope: CRM against platform

These tools aren't really competing for the same job, which is why "which is better" has no answer.

  • Pipedrive is a sales CRM. Pipelines, deals, activities, follow-ups. It's opinionated about how selling works and it's good at that one thing. Its own marketing leans on not paying for features you won't use.
  • HubSpot is a platform. Marketing, sales, service, content and data management in one system, with AI agents layered on. If you want your email marketing, your website and your CRM sharing one contact record, that's a real and hard-to-replicate advantage.

So the honest framing: if you need a CRM, Pipedrive. If you need a marketing and sales system and the CRM is one part of it, HubSpot — and the price of the whole platform is what you should be evaluating, not the $7 entry point.

Questions we get asked

Is HubSpot's free CRM actually usable?

For two users, yes — it's a real free tier with foundational tools and no credit card required, not a time-limited trial. The constraint is the two-user cap and the feature ceiling; the moment you add a third person you're on a paid plan.

Why does Pipedrive not offer a free plan?

It's a positioning choice: Pipedrive sells to teams that are already selling, and prices accordingly. The 14-day trial requires no card, so you can evaluate it properly — but you can't run on it indefinitely the way you can with HubSpot Free.

Which is easier to leave?

Both export contacts and deals, so your data isn't hostage. The practical lock-in is different: with Pipedrive you're rebuilding pipelines and automations in a new CRM. With HubSpot, if you've adopted the wider platform, you may also be moving your marketing emails, forms and website content — which is a far bigger project. The deeper you go into HubSpot, the more expensive leaving becomes.

Do you earn from either?

From Pipedrive, yes — we have an affiliate relationship with them. From HubSpot, no.

That's worth knowing while reading, so here's the check you should run: this page tells you to choose HubSpot if you're two people with no budget or if you want the wider platform, and it warns you that Pipedrive has no free plan at all. Those are the conclusions that cost us money. If the reasoning were bent toward the payer, they wouldn't be here.

The verdict

Our recommendation

Pipedrive if you want a CRM. Predictable per-seat pricing from $14, a clear ladder to $69, and a tool that does one job without asking you to adopt a platform. For a sales team that intends to grow, knowing your cost per seat in three years is worth more than saving $7 a month today.

HubSpot if you want a platform, or you're two people with no budget. The free tier is real and the $7 Starter is the cheapest entry in this comparison. Just go in with the next tier priced — the entry point is not where this decision gets expensive.

The failure mode to avoid is choosing HubSpot because it's free, building your company's processes inside it, and meeting the upgrade price after switching has become a quarter-long project.

Pricing read from pipedrive.com and hubspot.com on 16 September 2026, in USD. Pipedrive figures are per seat with annual billing. HubSpot's Free and Starter tiers were verified; its Professional and Enterprise tiers were not established and are therefore not quoted. Under our methodology this comparison is at the "researched, not tested" level. Found something out of date? Tell us.
