beehiiv is a newsletter platform — not an email marketing tool that also does newsletters. That distinction runs through every decision in the product. It was founded by people who worked on Morning Brew, and it's built for the specific job of publishing to an audience and eventually earning from it.
Practically, you get a newsletter, a website and podcast hosting in one place, plus a subscriber list you own, plus monetisation tools: an ad network that matches sponsors to newsletters, paid subscriptions, and a referral programme. The things it doesn't try to be are a CRM, an ecommerce automation engine, or a general-purpose marketing platform.
As of 2026 it also ships an MCP integration, meaning Claude or ChatGPT can query your newsletter data directly — read access is available even on the free plan. Few competitors have this yet; whether it matters depends entirely on whether you work with AI assistants.

You also get the recommendation network on the free plan, where newsletters cross-promote each other. For a new publication with no audience, that's a more useful growth feature than most paid tools offer.
Now the part the marketing doesn't lead with. The free plan has no automations at all. Not a limited number — none. You cannot send an automatic welcome email to a new subscriber. - Writers starting a newsletter from zero. Free to 2,500 subscribers with a custom domain removes every excuse not to start, and the recommendation network helps with the hardest part — the first few hundred readers.
- Newsletters planning to monetise through sponsorship. The ad network is the most developed in the category and matches sponsors to you rather than the reverse.

Look elsewhere if
