ActiveCampaign review: excellent, but not on the plan they advertise

The most powerful automation in this category — sold with an entry plan that removes the automation.

How we're funded: ActiveCampaign runs an affiliate program and we may earn a recurring commission if you sign up through our link, at no extra cost to you. Worth knowing while reading a page whose main message is "budget three times the advertised price" — a bigger plan pays us more. We think the advice is right anyway; judge the reasoning. Full disclosure.

The short verdict

Use ActiveCampaign if your business genuinely runs on automation — conditional branching, lead scoring, CRM-linked sequences, ecommerce triggers. Nothing else in this category comes close, and if that's your requirement, the price is justified.

The trap: the advertised $15 Starter plan limits each automation to 5 actions. A basic welcome sequence — wait, send, check if opened, branch, send — is five actions. You hit the ceiling on your first workflow. The realistic entry point is Plus at $49/month, over three times the headline price.

Pick something else if you're running a newsletter. This is a marketing automation platform with email attached, not the reverse, and you'd be paying for machinery you'll never start.

What ActiveCampaign is

ActiveCampaign is a marketing automation platform with a built-in CRM — email is one channel it uses rather than the product itself. That framing explains both its strength and who it's wrong for.

The automation builder is the reason people choose it: multi-step workflows with conditional branching, lead scoring, site tracking, ecommerce triggers, predictive sending and 950+ prebuilt recipes. If your marketing depends on "if someone viewed the pricing page twice but didn't buy, wait two days and send this", this is the tool that does it well.

As of 2026 it also positions itself around what it calls autonomous marketing, with AI-assisted automation and campaign building, and offers WhatsApp as a channel alongside email.

What it costs

Read from ActiveCampaign's pricing page on 16 September 2026, at 1,000 contacts, billed annually, in USD.

PlanAnnualUsersAutomationEmail sends
Starter$15/mo15 actions max10× contacts
Plusrealistic entry$49/mo1Unlimited10× contacts
Pro$79/mo3Unlimited12× contacts
Enterprise$145/mo5Unlimited15× contacts

No free plan; there is a 30-day money-back guarantee. Prices rise with contact count — check the figure at the list size you expect. Plus adds landing pages and 25 active goals; Pro adds advanced segmentation, predictive sending, conditional content and attribution; Enterprise adds SSO and custom objects.

The 5-action trap

This is the single most useful thing on this page, and almost no competing review mentions it.

The Starter plan is advertised with "marketing automation" in its feature list. What the comparison table shows, a click further in, is "5 actions per automation". Actions are the individual steps in a workflow. So a sequence like:

  1. Wait one day
  2. Send welcome email
  3. Wait three days
  4. If opened → send follow-up A
  5. If not opened → send follow-up B

…is exactly five actions. You have now used your entire allowance on the most basic sequence in email marketing, and you cannot add a step.

People come to ActiveCampaign because of its automation. The entry plan is the one that removes it. That's not a small footnote — it means the honest entry price for this product is $49, not $15, and any roundup quoting $15 without this caveat was written by someone who never opened the pricing comparison.

Bar chart comparing advertised entry prices against real prices. ActiveCampaign shows the largest absolute gap: $15 advertised versus $49 for usable automation.
ActiveCampaign has the largest gap in the category between the advertised price and the plan that does the job it's bought for.

The regional pricing catch

Something we ran into while verifying, worth passing on: ActiveCampaign prices by region and switches currency based on your location without an obvious notice.

Loading the pricing page from Brazil, we were shown R$70 / R$217 / R$364 / R$658 as the default. The dollar figures above appeared only after explicitly forcing the currency selector to USD. If you're comparing ActiveCampaign against competitors that quote in dollars, check which currency your own page is showing before concluding anything — the numbers are not directly comparable, and the page won't warn you.

Pros and cons

ActiveCampaign

Best for serious automation — at the real price
What's genuinely good
  • The most capable automation engine in this category, by a distance
  • Unlimited automation actions from Plus up
  • Built-in CRM, with deep ecommerce integrations
  • 950+ prebuilt automation recipes
  • Lead scoring, site tracking and conditional content
  • Predictive sending on Pro
  • 30-day money-back guarantee softens the no-free-plan problem
What's genuinely not
  • Starter caps automations at 5 actions — unusable for its main purpose
  • Real entry price is $49, over 3× the advertised $15
  • No free plan at all
  • Plus gives only 1 seat; 3 seats means Pro at $79
  • Prices change by country with no clear warning
  • Steep learning curve versus MailerLite or beehiiv
  • Heavy overkill for a plain newsletter

Who should and shouldn't use it

Strong choice for

  • Businesses selling products with a real funnel. Abandoned carts, post-purchase sequences, win-back campaigns — this is what it's built for.
  • Anyone who needs email and CRM in one place. The CRM isn't an afterthought, and that integration is hard to replicate by bolting tools together.
  • Marketers who've outgrown simpler tools. If you're fighting your current platform's automation limits, this is where you go.

Look elsewhere if

  • You write a newsletter. beehiiv is free to 2,500 subscribers and built for exactly that.
  • $49/month is real money to you. MailerLite gives you 50 automations for $10.80. It's less powerful, and for most creators that's irrelevant.
  • You were attracted by the $15 price. That plan won't do what you came for. Choose MailerLite rather than a crippled ActiveCampaign.

Questions we get asked

Is ActiveCampaign worth $49 a month?

If automation drives revenue for you, comfortably yes — one recovered abandoned cart sequence can cover a year. If you're sending a weekly newsletter, no, and it isn't close: you'd be paying roughly 4.5× MailerLite's price for capability you won't use.

What exactly counts as an "action"?

Each step in a workflow: a wait, a send, a condition, a tag, an update. The five-action cap on Starter therefore includes the logic, not just the emails — which is why it runs out so fast. Conditions are usually where people hit it first.

ActiveCampaign or MailerLite?

MailerLite at $10.80 unless you have a specific automation requirement MailerLite can't meet. Most people don't. MailerLite's 50 automations with 100 steps each cover the vast majority of creator and small-business use cases at a fifth of the price.

Switch to ActiveCampaign when you can name the exact workflow you can't build — not before.

You'd earn more if I bought the expensive plan. Why should I trust the $49 advice?

Fair challenge, and the disclosure at the top says the same thing. Two checks: this page also tells you to buy MailerLite instead if $49 is a stretch, and our roundup ranks ActiveCampaign 4th of 5, below two tools that pay us nothing. The $49 recommendation isn't upselling — it's that the $15 plan can't do the job, which you can verify on their own comparison table.

The verdict

Our recommendation

ActiveCampaign is the best automation platform in this comparison and the wrong choice for most people reading about email marketing for creators. Both things are true.

If you need it, you'll know why: you have a workflow in mind that simpler tools refuse to build. Budget $49/month for Plus, not the $15 you saw advertised, and treat the 30-day guarantee as your trial.

If you don't need it — if you're sending a newsletter and want a welcome sequence — you are looking at the wrong product, and the $15 plan that seems to bridge the gap will not do what you want.
